Dear Parents,
It is sad, but true that school is officially
over. I am so proud of this years first graders. They have improved tremendously over the year and will continue
to thrive in second grade. Please remind your student to read this summer and keep up on the skills they have learned
this year. I have no doubt that they will do great next year! Thank you for a wonderful year and have a fun
and safe summer!

Planners/Agendas
in 1st Grade... We will be continuing use of agenda/planners this school year. Your child will write in their
planner each day. Inside the planner you will find a daily log. Sometimes there will be nothing written for the
day. Other times, there may be a lot of information. First graders need time to learn how to write in these and
we will be working on this task the first couple of weeks of school. There is a small space for parent comments and
questions within the planner. I check the planners each day and will respond to any comments or questions that you have
written. Planners need to be returned each day. If these get lost, students will be expected to pay for
another one at $5.00.

Accelerated
Reader: Your child will begin Accelerated Reader, as they become more fluent readers. I will be assessing students
to see what level they are reading at and if they are prepared for the accelerated reader program I will put them in.
This program includes tests on the computer and students are expected to read the questions. First graders take more
time to become ready for these tests.

Spelling in Mrs. Smith's 1st
Grade Class...

Your
child will take a spelling pretest on Monday. If they get a 100% on the pretest, they will bring home a bonus list of
words to study. They will already have a 100% grade on the test, but each bonus word they get correct will give them
extra points. They will be tested on Friday of each week. Spelling List, Week of Regular Words Bonus Words

Friday Folders...

Each Friday, your child will bring home
a folder of their work for the week. Also included in this folder are any notes from the teacher or school. Please
take a moment to review the contents of your child’s folder with them. What a great opportunity for your child
to discuss what they have learned in school the past week! Please be careful to return the folder each Monday, as your
child will only receive one folder per quarter. Also, use the comment section on the folder to let me know if you have
any specific needs.
