Dear Parents,

Welcome to the Second Grade website!  I hope that this website will help you stay connected with the happenings in our classroom.  I try to add weekly letters on Friday to the archive so check there if for some reason you didn't receive the one attached to your child's Friday Folder.  Also, there is information below to help you better understand the procedures and routines of our classroom.  I will be updating the curriculum table below with each new unit of study so you can see what we are currently studying about in second grade.  I hope you enjoy the new site!

Thanks,

Carrie LaFay

Mrs. LaFay's Spelling Program...

Dear Parents,

You may have noticed that your child’s spelling list looks a bit different this week than it did last week.  This is because we have started individual spelling lists.  It is my goal that through individual spelling lists; I can meet the spelling needs specifically for your child and tailor their list accordingly.

The second grade students will take a spelling pretest on Monday.  Each of the words on the pretest will follow a spelling rule or pattern that we will be focusing on for the entire week.  If your child has misspelled a word on the Monday pretest, it has been placed on their new “individual” spelling list in the 1-10 section.  If they missed very few words from the pretest and still have space available in the 1-10 section, I will give them a list of personal bonus words to choose from.  These personal bonus words will follow the same spelling pattern of those on the original pretest.

The 11-16 section of the spelling list is reserved for misspelled words from the previous week’s Friday final test and class bonus words.  Any word that has been misspelled on the previous Friday’s final test will be placed first in the 11-16 section of the new week’s spelling list.  If there is still space available, your child may choose from the class bonus words in order to fill each of the blanks in the 11-16 section.  If you have any questions about our new spelling list format, please call me at the school (347-2411) or at home (634-7599). This procedure has been explained to your child today but we will continue to review the procedure until they have it down pat. Give us a few weeks!

Thanks for your support,
Mrs. LaFay

Planners/Agendas in 2nd Grade...
We will be continuing use of agenda/planners this school year.  Your child will write in their planner each day.  Inside the planner you will find a daily log.  Sometimes there will be nothing written for the day.  Other times, there may be a lot of information.  First graders need time to learn how to write in these and we will be working on this task the first couple of weeks of school.  There is a small space for parent comments and questions within the planner.  I check the planners each day and will respond to any comments or questions that you have written.  Planners need to be returned each day.   If these get lost, students will be expected to pay for another one at $5.00.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS?
Call me at home 634-7599 or at school 347-2411. Thank you for your time and I look forward to another productive year with your students.

                              Sincerely,
                         Mrs. Carrie LaFay

Accelerated Reader:
Your child will be particpating in the Accelerated Reader program in 2nd grade. This program is designed to help your student become more fluent readers.  I will be assessing students to see what level they are reading at. This program includes tests on the computer and students are expected to read the questions.  I am expecting students to practice reading their Accelerated Reader two times before taking the test. Please be sure to have your student bring their Accelerated Reading Books back to school each day. We read them during D.E.A.R. time.

Friday Folders...

webassets/FridayFolderManillaEnvelope.jpg

Each Friday, your child will bring home a folder of their work for the week.  Also included in this folder are any notes from the teacher or school.  Please take a moment to review the contents of your child’s folder with them.  What a great opportunity for your child to discuss what they have learned in school the past week!  Please be careful to return the folder each Monday, as your child will only receive one folder per quarter.  Also, use the comment section on the folder to let me know if you have any specific needs.
