Mr. LaFay's Rules and Expectations:
Above all I want to prevent any discipline problems before
they erupt into something more serious. This can range from changes in the physical environment such as;
moving desks or distracting objects to moving students, or moving myself closer to possible disruptions. Most
of all prevention of misbehavior will have to do with the student, parents, and the teacher working together so that they
are all aware of expectations in the areas of rules, routines, and procedures. My goal is to set up a situation
that helps students to achieve without the delay of discipline in a positive caring environment.
Together as a class we
will clearly establish expectations for: rules, routines, procedures, consequences, and rewards.
We will be charting what we want our class to look like, sound like, and feel like. From there we
will create three to five rules for our classroom. Students can also earn time for a preferred activity
that they choose throughout the day for being in the right place at the right time or just showing a good work ethic.
Other incentives I will be offering are “caught being good cards.” If I see a student
setting an exemplary example of what to do I will give them a card. The cards will be put in a jar, and
three cards will be drawn at the end of each week. The student whose name is drawn will get to pick a prize
out of the box.
If a student displays inappropriate behavior that does not follow the expectations of the classroom students
will be asked to write a reminder. The reminder will need to be written in a way that states what they
should have been doing, focusing on the positive.
When a student writes their first reminder for the week they will lose five minutes of their recess
and the reminder will be sent home to be signed by a parent. A second reminder for the week will result
in losing a special activity such as P.E., Music, Computer Lab, Art Class, or a whole recess and the reminder will be sent
home to be signed by a parent. When a student writes their third reminder for the week they will lose recess
and specials for that day and the following. They will also need to call home to inform their parent of
his/her actions. It is important to remember that reminders could be written for forgetting a responsibility
such as turning in homework or not completing a certain job, not just for showing disrespect or misconduct. Using
this system consistently will help to make students accountable for their actions and responsibilities.
Our school policy states
that there is NO TOLERANCE for violence. If your child becomes physically violent with another student,
they will be suspended from school. A student suspended from school the first time will be sent home for
a day. Repeat offenders will be asked to stay out two days. After a child has been suspended
a third time, they may not reenter the school until their parent or guardian returns with them for a full day.
